2 former Wheaton College football players drown in Lake Michigan

Two former Wheaton College football players, Philip LoChirco, 24, of Warrenville, Illinois, and Jalen Shaffer, 26, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, drowned in Lake Michigan near the south pier of the Pigeon Lake Channel in Port Sheldon Township on Saturday around 1:15 p.m. The incident began when the group jumped from the pier and LoChirco started struggling in the water, prompting others to attempt a rescue, during which Shaffer also went under. Despite efforts by bystanders, sheriff's deputies, firefighters, and marine patrol officers, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
