24-year-old woman dies after collapsing in final stages of New York City Marathon

Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old former college athlete, died after collapsing approximately two miles from the finish line of the New York City Marathon on Sunday. Her father Steve Apa told the New York Times that she died from rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by the breakdown of muscle tissue. It was Rachel's first marathon, and she had been running as part of the Parkinson's Champions team in memory of her late grandfather.
