Alfonzo makes MLB debut with heavy heart after family tragedy in Venezuela
Eliezer Alfonzo made his MLB debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday despite learning that his sister Eliana and stepmother Patricia had been found dead following two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, a disaster that has killed over 3,000 people. Alfonzo, son of former big league catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., chose to play in honor of his lost loved ones rather than sit out. The Dodgers lost the game 5-2 to the Padres, but Alfonzo received a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd acknowledging the personal tragedy he carried onto the field.
