Amanal Petros wins men's marathon at European championships. Alisa Vainio dominates in women's race

German runner Amanal Petros won the men's marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, August 16, 2026, finishing in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 11 seconds — a new championships record. He won by 7 seconds, redeeming himself after narrowly losing gold in a photo finish at the previous year's World Championships in Tokyo. Finland's Alisa Vainio also claimed a dominant victory in the women's marathon at the same event.
