Australia go level with USMNT in Group D after surprise win against Turkey
Australia defeated Turkey 2-0 in Vancouver on Saturday in a Group D World Cup match, with 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda opening the scoring midway through the first half and Connor Metcalfe sealing the result with a strike from outside the box 15 minutes from time. Turkey dominated possession and registered 30 shots β the most by a team without scoring in a World Cup match since Portugal vs England in 2006 β but were kept out by 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The result gives Australia an 85 per cent chance of reaching the knockout rounds according to The Athletic's projections, drawing them level with the USMNT in Group D.
