Brit Hudson-Smith wins European 400m gold
Matthew Hudson-Smith, a 31-year-old from Wolverhampton, won the 400m gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, clocking 44.17 seconds to claim his third career individual European title. The Olympic silver medallist led from lane nine and was never overtaken, finishing ahead of Muhammad Abdallah Kounta of France (44.40s) and Jonas Phijffers of the Netherlands (44.41s, a national record). The victory took place on Wednesday at a stadium that features a temporary stand named after Hudson-Smith himself, who grew up competing for Birchfield Harriers.
