Brutal Shinnecock winds blow away US Open contenders
The first round of the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills on Thursday, June 18 was disrupted by a two-hour fog delay and brutal winds that made scoring extremely difficult for top players. Sweden's Ludvig Åberg shared the lead at the turn, with world number two Rory McIlroy and England's Tommy Fleetwood one stroke behind. World number one Scottie Scheffler, a two-time Masters winner and reigning British Open and PGA Championship holder, was competing for the career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday.
