Burrage receives death threats after first WTA match in 16 months

British tennis player Jodie Burrage received death threats and widespread social media abuse after losing her first WTA main-draw singles match in 16 months, a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Vaishnavi Adkar at the Chennai Open on Tuesday. Burrage, 27, shared a recording of the abusive Instagram messages she received, writing 'I remember why I left.' Many of the messages appeared to come from gamblers unhappy with the result, consistent with World Tennis data showing angry gamblers were responsible for 48% of more than 12,000 abusive social media posts between January and October 2024.
