Chaotic F1 race sees bizarre Lewis Hamilton start as first-time winner triumphs

The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix on 1 August at the Hungaroring descended into chaos when a first-lap multi-car collision involving Valtteri Bottas, Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Charles Leclerc, and Daniel Ricciardo eliminated five drivers and triggered a red flag. At the standing restart, Lewis Hamilton was left as the sole car on the grid after his Mercedes team kept him on intermediate tyres while all other remaining runners pitted for slicks, a decision that proved costly and forced an early pit stop. The race ultimately produced a first-time winner in what was described as one of the most dramatic grands prix of the modern F1 era.
