Cubs shore up injury-plagued rotation, get lefty Peterson from Mets

The Chicago Cubs acquired left-handed pitcher David Peterson, 30, from the New York Mets on June 25, 2026, in exchange for first baseman/DH Cole Matthis, the Cubs' No. 13 prospect. Peterson is 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA in 16 games this season, striking out 63 batters over 68 innings. A former All-Star and 2017 first-round pick, Peterson posted a career-best 2.90 ERA in 2024 and will become a free agent at season's end.
