Lando Norris, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, qualified third at the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps after setting provisional pole on his first Q3 lap, despite McLaren's low expectations at the track. However, a 10-place grid penalty dropped him down the starting order, and questions arose over whether McLaren's Virtual Safety Car strategic call cost him a potential podium finish. Norris himself believed at least a podium was achievable given his pace during the race weekend.
