South Africa announced on Thursday that Durban, its east coast city, will be its preferred candidate to host the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, beating out Johannesburg and Cape Town for the bid. If successful, the Games would be held in Africa for the first time in history. The International Olympic Committee is scheduled to choose the host city for 2036 in mid-2029.
