Emmanuel Wanyonyi takes down 27-year-old world 1000m record
Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the 27-year-old world 1000m record at the Monaco Diamond League on July 10, clocking 2:11.83 to surpass Noah Ngeny's mark of 2:11.96 set in Rieti in 1999. The Kenyan, who is the reigning Olympic and world 800m champion, was competing in his first-ever 1000m race. Jake Wightman finished second in 2:12.77, moving to fifth on the all-time 1000m list, leapfrogging Steve Cram's 2:12.88.
