England v New Zealand: second men’s Test, day five – live
England ended day four of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval on 182 for five, needing a further 281 runs to win after New Zealand posted 362 in their second innings. Joe Root, serving as interim captain in the absence of disciplined Ben Stokes, reached an unbeaten 75 and became only the second player in Test history to surpass 14,000 career runs. Stokes, meanwhile, was 275 miles north scoring 95 for Durham in the County Championship, with Josh Tongue acknowledging his absence has hurt England's chances.
