European Boxing Championships: Jon McConnell beats Ekinci to progress in Euros

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jon McConnell defeated Turkey's Necat Ekinci by unanimous decision (30-27 on all five judges' scorecards) in the opening round of the European Boxing Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 23-year-old competed in the men's 70kg category and was the first of the 14-strong Team Ireland squad to fight at the tournament. McConnell will next face Poland's Damian Durkacz in the last 16 on Saturday.
