Extreme heat disrupts athletics and running events

A UK heatwave with temperatures exceeding 30C and a rare red warning for extreme heat on June 24 prompted the cancellation or modification of numerous athletics and running events. Multiple road races, including the Corby 5 in Northamptonshire, the Thruxton 10km in Hampshire, and the Lyme Midsummer Trail 10km in Cheshire, were called off on June 24. School athletics events were also cancelled or shortened, with one meeting in Gateshead reducing the 800m race to 500m as temperatures reached 34C.
