F1 moves away from unpopular engine split for '27
Formula 1 has agreed in principle to shift from the unpopular 50/50 power split between combustion and electrical elements to a 60/40 split favouring the internal combustion engine from 2027, following hardware tweak discussions between F1 bosses and teams on Friday. The change addresses widespread driver complaints about excessive lifting-and-coasting required to charge batteries under the current regulations. High-profile drivers including Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and reigning world champion Lando Norris have all publicly criticised the new power unit formula.
