F1 timing error saves Hulkenberg from grid drop
Nico Hulkenberg avoided a grid penalty for the 2026 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix despite stewards finding he had 'unnecessarily impeded' Carlos Sainz during qualifying. Hulkenberg was on the racing line at Turn 5's entry on a cooldown lap when Sainz was pushing on his final Q2 lap, forcing Sainz to abandon the lap and ultimately be eliminated in 14th place. Stewards ruled 'extraordinary mitigating circumstances' applied because Audi had relied on incorrect official timing information, leading them to believe Sainz was not on a flying lap, allowing Hulkenberg to retain his 10th place starting position.
