FIA approves major changes to future Formula 1 engine rules

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council officially ratified major updates to Formula 1's power unit regulations at the FIA Conference in Macau on June 23. The approved changes revise the engine blueprints for 2027 and 2028, shifting from a 50/50 internal combustion to electrical power split to a 60/40 ratio favouring the ICE by 2028, with ICE output increasing by 50kW to 450kW and MGU-K maximum power dropping to 300kW. Fuel flow rates will expand by 5% in 2027 and 13% in 2028 to support the higher ICE performance, addressing both cost cap concerns and driver dissatisfaction with existing regulations.
