Fifa reportedly allowed DR Congo into World Cup despite ineligible player in qualifying
FIFA reportedly allowed DR Congo to compete at this summer's World Cup despite an internal investigation finding that goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, born in France and a former French youth international, had never completed the process of switching nationalities to represent Congo. Nigeria had filed a complaint over the ineligible player during qualifying, and FIFA investigators were reportedly aware of the situation before the tournament began. Despite these findings, no punishment was levied against the Congolese football federation, Fecofa, and Mpasi went on to play for DR Congo at the tournament, including in a last-32 match against England.
