FIFA wants one homegrown player in club games
FIFA's Council agreed late Tuesday to pursue a formal plan, expected within a year following global stakeholder consultation, that would require all professional club teams to always have at least one homegrown player aged under-20 or under-21 on the field during matches. The proposed rule would be stricter than existing homegrown quotas in competitions like the Champions League, which currently only regulate squad list composition rather than on-field selection. The initiative aims to increase playing opportunities for young players developed by clubs that typically rely on bought and imported talent.
