FLASH: Wanyonyi breaks world 1000m record with 2:11.83 in Monaco

Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the world 1000m record on July 10, 2026, at the Wanda Diamond League Herculis EBS meeting in Monaco, clocking 2:11.83 on his 1000m debut. The Kenyan, who is the reigning Olympic and world 800m champion, bettered the previous record of 2:11.96 set by compatriot Noah Ngeny in Rieti in 1999 by 0.13 seconds. Jake Wightman finished second in 2:12.77, moving to fifth on the all-time world list, while Djamel Sedjati took third place.
