Formula 1 announces return to Africa with Grand Prix in Rwanda in early 2030s
Formula 1 has announced a 10-year deal to host an African Grand Prix in Rwanda, marking the sport's return to the continent for the first time since 1993. A purpose-built circuit will be constructed in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of the capital Kigali, with the first race expected early in the 2030s. The deal was announced Tuesday by F1 and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, and fulfills a long-held ambition of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has publicly advocated for a race in Africa.
