Formula 1 to cut official race distances from 305 to 290 kilometers

Formula 1 has approved a reduction in official race distances from 305 to 290 kilometers, effective next season, equating to a reduction of two or three laps per race. The decision was made by the Formula 1 Commission in London, chaired by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis, and aligns with new 2027 power unit regulations favoring increased engine power over hybrid electrical output. The commission also abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap while retaining the two-hour active racing time limit, giving organizers greater flexibility to manage rain delays and red flags.
