Gobena breaks course record while Jepchirchir dominates in Sydney

At the TCS Sydney Marathon on 29 August 2026, Ethiopia's Addisu Gobena broke the course record by winning in 2:04:42, finishing three seconds ahead of compatriot Chimdessa Debele, with all top seven men finishing inside the previous record of 2:06:06. World champion Peres Jepchirchir dominated the women's race, winning in 2:18:31 — just nine seconds off the course record — after pulling away from Irine Cheptai after the 30km mark. Jepchirchir's winning margin was more than three minutes over the rest of the field.
