Houston mayor supports NHL expansion plans: 'We'll be there'
Houston Mayor John Whitmire has expressed strong support for the city landing an NHL expansion franchise, telling The Sporting News his office is ready to assist in securing the league's 33rd team. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced in June that The Friedkin Group is undergoing a six-month evaluation to determine whether Houston or Austin is the better location, with the total cost of the expansion fee and new arena estimated at $3.5 billion. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stated the goal is for the new franchise to begin play in the 2029-30 season, with definitive agreements potentially in place as early as December 2025.
