IndyCar drivers grapple with adjusting to Detroit Grand Prix street course

IndyCar drivers are adjusting to the challenging 1.7-mile, nine-turn downtown Detroit street circuit at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, with the added difficulty of a quick turnaround following the Indy 500. In the first practice session on Friday, May 29, 2026, IndyCar series leader Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) set the fastest time, followed by defending race champion Kyle Kirkwood and Will Power, both of Andretti Global. Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday with the race on Sunday.
