IOC breaks with 130 years of tradition by paying athletes to compete at Olympics
The International Olympic Committee has established a $140 million (£106 million) fund to pay every Olympic athlete a $10,000 'fit for the future' grant, breaking with 130 years of tradition. The payments will begin retroactively with the approximately 3,000 athletes who competed at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games, then extend to the 11,000 athletes expected at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games and all future Olympics. The decision was announced by the IOC on Wednesday.
