British cyclist Finlay Tarling was killed during Stage 8 of the 2026 Volta a Portugal after a vehicle entered the race route and struck him. The race, which had been relaunched in 2026 with a new organization, fresh route, and international broadcast including UAE Team Emirates - XRG, was marred by the tragedy. Portuguese Cycling Federation president Cândido Barbosa expressed condolences and stated that organizers are investigating how the vehicle accessed a 1,300-kilometer race course to understand the circumstances of the fatal incident.
