Joe Root is the frontrunner to serve as England Test captain for the upcoming three-match series against Pakistan next month, stepping in should Ben Stokes remain unavailable. The England & Wales Cricket Board is simultaneously managing three separate shortlists — for a permanent red-ball coach, an interim coach, and a potential stand-in captain — with Marcus Trescothick among those considered for the interim coaching role. Root previously filled the captaincy role during the recent Test against New Zealand at The Oval when Stokes was effectively suspended for breaking a team curfew.
