Kartal reaches Wuhan final; will be new Brit No. 1

Sonay Kartal defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) in the Wuhan Open semifinals, saving six set points across the match to reach the biggest final of her career. The 24-year-old, ranked 170th coming into the tournament, becomes the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format began in 2009. Her result guarantees her a top-50 ranking next week, surpassing Katie Boulter as British No. 1, and she will face Poland's Maja Chwalinska in Sunday's final after Chwalinska upset world No. 1 Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1.
