Leader Herbert, Burns equal record 62 at British Open, DeChambeau docked two shots
Australian Lucas Herbert stormed into a two-shot lead at the British Open on Friday, July 17, 2026, after he and American Sam Burns both carded eight-under par 62s to equal the record for the lowest round in major golf history. Their scores matched the course record set by Branden Grace at Royal Birkdale in 2017, one of five previous rounds of 62 at majors. Bryson DeChambeau, who had closed to within one shot of Herbert, was dealt a two-stroke penalty for unintentionally improving his lie.
