Maurice Herriott, 1964 Olympic steeplechase silver medallist, dies aged 86
Maurice Herriott, one of Britain's greatest steeplechasers, died on August 24 aged 86 following a short illness, surrounded by his family. He won Olympic silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the 1964 Tokyo Games with a lifetime best of 8:32.4, and claimed eight AAA titles between 1959 and 1967, a record that remains unmatched. He was also the first ever British Athletics Writers' Association athlete of the year, and notably achieved all this while working 45-hour weeks as a motorcycle fitter at the Birmingham Small Arms factory.
