Mercedes Is Winning F1 but Losing the Upgrade War

Mercedes dominated the opening six races of the 2026 Formula 1 season under new regulations, but the last six grands prix have been split equally between Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren. Team boss Toto Wolff has admitted that Mercedes lacks the financial flexibility to match the rapid development rates of Ferrari and McLaren, who have been introducing upgrades at a faster pace. McLaren in particular has thrived recently, winning in Hungary and the Netherlands after deliberately starting 2026 with a basic car before developing it heavily.
