Mercedes' new engine upgrade plan is terrible news for Ferrari

Mercedes is set to introduce an ADUO-assisted power unit upgrade during the 2026 Formula 1 season, posing a threat to Ferrari's already fading title chances. Under F1's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) catch-up mechanism, triggered because Red Bull's internal combustion engine is more than 2% ahead of rivals, Mercedes has earned the right to one upgrade in 2026 and one in 2027. Ferrari, Audi, and Honda are permitted two upgrades each in both 2026 and 2027, while Red Bull is currently barred from any improvements.
