Lionel Messi and Argentina survived a major World Cup scare, defeating Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time in the last 32. Messi scored on 29 minutes to become the first player to score 20 World Cup goals, his seventh of the tournament, but Cape Verde equalised through Deroy Duarte. Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the world and the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage, had impressed in the group stage by holding Spain to a 0-0 draw and drawing with both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
