Money-making Nations Championship project carries a cost for fans and players

The article critiques the new Nations Championship rugby tournament, arguing that while it is designed to generate revenue and provide competitive context for international matches, it comes at a significant cost to both fans and players. The piece uses the historic 1905 All Blacks vs Wales match — including the controversial try by Bob Deans, tackled by Rhys Gabe — as an example of legendary international rugby clashes that needed no manufactured framework to captivate audiences. The author implies that commercializing international rugby through such tournaments risks undermining the organic drama that has historically defined the sport.
