NBA Board of Governors approves new Draft Lottery system to address tanking

The NBA Board of Governors has approved a new Draft Lottery system called the '3-2-1 Lottery,' which expands the lottery pool from 14 to 16 teams and flattens odds among non-playoff teams to discourage tanking. Under the new system, teams that miss both the NBA Playoffs and Play-In Tournament will receive three lottery balls each, with others receiving two or one. The new system is set to take effect beginning with the 2027 NBA Draft.
