NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on passing of John Garrett
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released a statement on April 28, 2026, mourning the sudden passing of John Garrett, a former goaltender who played 13 seasons in the WHA and NHL before transitioning to broadcasting in 1986. Garrett spent nearly four decades as a hockey analyst, most notably two decades with the Vancouver Canucks, as well as work for the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, and national broadcaster Sportsnet. His final broadcast was the Utah Mammoth's first-ever home playoff game on Friday night, where Bettman saw him one last time.
