Nichols, who saved Oilers from relocation in 1990s, dies at 84

Cal Nichols, the businessman who saved the Edmonton Oilers from relocation, passed away on Saturday at the age of 84. In 1997, after owner Peter Pocklington put the team up for sale, Nichols assembled a group of 38 local investors and purchased the Oilers for $110 million in 1998, keeping the franchise in Edmonton. The Edmonton Investors Group later sold the team to current owner Daryl Katz in 2008.
