Oilers sign Alex Formenton, acquitted Hockey Canada player, to 1-year contract

The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year contract worth $850,000 annually, the team announced Wednesday. Formenton, 26, was one of five former members of Canada's World Junior team acquitted of sexual assault charges in a July 2025 trial related to an alleged 2018 incident in London, Ontario. Formenton has not played in the NHL since April 2022, and Hockey Canada reinstated him in August 2025 after the NHL cleared the acquitted players to sign with teams as of October 15, 2025.
