On this Day in Formula 1: Mansell crowned as Schumacher outsmarts McLaren, Hamilton dominates

August 16 has been a significant date in Formula 1 history, most notably in 1992 when Nigel Mansell clinched his first and only World Drivers' Championship at the Hungarian Grand Prix after finishing second behind Ayrton Senna, securing the title at just the 11th race of the season. That same 1992 Hungarian GP also marked the final Formula 1 appearance for the Brabham team, which withdrew due to financial difficulties. Earlier in F1 history, the 1970 Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring saw Jacky Ickx win for Ferrari by just 0.610 seconds over teammate Clay Regazzoni, while pole-sitter Jochen Rindt retired with engine failure after 21 laps.
