Ovechkin tells Capitals teammates this will be his last NHL season

Alex Ovechkin, 41, announced to his Washington Capitals teammates on Monday that the 2024-25 NHL season will be his last. The all-time NHL goal-scoring record holder with 929 career goals made the decision over the summer after consulting with his family, and has spent all 22 of his NHL seasons with Washington since being selected No. 1 overall in the 2004 Draft. He made the announcement before the team's home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday so he could focus on playing rather than the announcement.
