Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage broke the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meeting record in Rome on June 4, 2026, with a massive throw of 92.62m, surpassing Andreas Thorkildsen's 20-year-old record of 90.34m by over two metres. The effort moved Pathirage to eighth on the world all-time list and made him the second-best Asian javelin thrower in history, representing a personal improvement of three metres.
