Pathirage and Cunningham break meeting records in Rome

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage broke the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meeting record in Rome on June 4, 2026, with a throw of 92.62m, surpassing Andreas Thorkildsen's 20-year-old record of 90.34m by over two metres. The effort moved Pathirage to eighth on the all-time world list and made him the second-best Asian thrower in history, and also represents the best throw globally since the 2024 Olympic final. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters finished second with 83.91m, while world bronze medallist Curtis Thompson was third with 83.89m.
