PGA Tour dramatically overhauling its playoffs, adopting match-play format

The PGA Tour announced a dramatic overhaul of its playoff format, set to begin in 2028 when the tour transitions to its Championship and Challenger Series structure. The new Tour Championship will feature a two-week match-play competition: the first week will see the top 32 players compete in World Cup-style group play split into eight groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing. The second week will feature a four-round, 16-man single-elimination bracket at a rotating venue, with PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp expected to formally announce the changes at a Tuesday press conference in Atlanta.
