Premier League refs admit VAR 'error' on Haaland derby winner
Premier League referees' body Pro Ref has apologized to Manchester United after admitting that VAR official Matthew Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus made an error in awarding Erling Haaland's 60th-minute goal in Manchester City's 1-0 derby win at Old Trafford. The VAR duo overruled an assistant referee's offside flag by incorrectly ruling that City's Enzo Fernández was not interfering with play, allowing Haaland's winner from a Josko Gvardiol deflected cross to stand. United manager Michael Carrick described the decision as 'worrying' and defender Lisandro Martínez called it an 'injustice,' with Pro Ref now acknowledging it as likely the biggest VAR error since the system's introduction in 2019.
