Russia to host first Olympic federation world event since Ukraine invasion

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has become the first Olympic federation to award Russia hosting rights for a world championships since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This marks a significant development as most international sports bodies had avoided granting Russia major hosting duties following the 2022 invasion. The decision has drawn attention given the ongoing geopolitical conflict and the broader sporting sanctions applied to Russia in its aftermath.
