Ryder Cowan qualifies with a birdie and then beats Miles Russell in US Amateur

Oklahoma senior Ryder Cowan advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur after making a birdie in a playoff, then defeated 17-year-old Miles Russell, the world's No. 4 ranked amateur, by chipping in for par on the 17th hole at Merion on Wednesday. Cowan, ranked No. 8 in the world amateur rankings, closed out the victory to progress in the tournament. Earlier this summer, Cowan had shared low amateur honors at the U.S. Open alongside Jackson Koivun.
