Sawe’s secret sauce: inside the lab that fuelled historic sub-two hour marathon

Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe made history last month in London by becoming the first person to run an official marathon in under two hours. While much attention has focused on his carbon-plated shoes, Swedish sports nutrition company Maurten, based in Gothenburg, claims their high-carbohydrate drinks, bicarbonate sludges, and hydrogels played an equally significant role in the achievement. Maurten's team of scientists and nutritionists has since named a conference room in their office after Sawe, alongside other distance running greats such as Eliud Kipchoge and Keely Hodgkinson.
